  • Business Insider spoke with Amazon’s former Director of Corporate Development Aaron Barfoot, who now serves as the chief financial officer of online security firm Forter.
  • “Good online hygiene means paying attention and being alert,” Barfoot said.

It’s a potential nightmare for anyone who’s ever shopped online: checking your bank account or credit card statement to find that a cybercriminal has stolen your identity and run up a huge bill.

During Amazon’s two-day Prime Day sales event and the upcoming 2020 holiday season, that’s a scenario that could become reality for more shoppers than ever before. For retailers looking to compete with Amazon around its annual Prime Day event, it’s not all about offering deep discounts to catch customers’ attention on the internet.

Start-ups like Warby Parker, Allbirds, Outdoor Voices and Everlane rarely offer promotions. Many of these companies have built their businesses online around a playbook that essentially says: We will never go on sale.

“As a brand, we don’t have sales,” said Brian Berger, CEO of the direct-to-consumer men’s sweatpants maker Mack Weldon. “We have a permanent loyalty program. … And that gets us out of the cycle of having to think about promotions and retraining customers in a way we wouldn’t want them to behave. Instead, around Prime Day and through this holiday season, Berger said, Mack Weldon will be boosting its marketing efforts, especially on social media. The brand launched

Amazon Prime Day boosts small business shopping, too

Amazon’s annual shopping bonanza known as Prime Day begins Tuesday. Though, not everyone is excited: Campaign groups have urged shoppers to instead spend cash in small, local shops.

They argue the coronavirus pandemic — along with the lockdowns and travel restrictions that followed — has accelerated hardship for small- and medium-sized businesses that rely on foot traffic into their shops. Before COVID-19, many companies were already struggling to compete against the likes of Amazon, which offers quick delivery and access to thousands of products online.

One German trade union urged workers at seven Amazon warehouses in the country to go on strike and advocate for better pay conditions.

But Oliver Bristowe, co-owner of Pets Purist, an animal care business in the English city of Manchester, said a boycott against Prime Day could negatively affect his business and thousands of others like it.

“A shop in a local community finds Amazon

11 Amazon Prime perks you’ll wish you knew sooner

Due in large part to the pandemic, more Americans than ever are “priming it.” That is, jumping on Amazon and using their Prime membership to get free two-day shipping on purchases.

Annual Prime membership costs $119. You can pay $12.99 monthly, but this will cost you $37 more per year. I’m not too fond of auto-renewals. Under your Prime Account settings, there is an option to get an email reminder three days before your membership renews.

Many people don’t know that you can get a free account if you shop Amazon for your business. It doesn’t come with perks like free videos. However, you will have access to multiple payment options, business-only pricing and quantity discounts. Learn more about how to register for your free Amazon Business account at this link.

There are other ways to save on your Prime membership. Two adult households do not need two Prime memberships.
