Australians wishing to sponsor their partner to remain in the country will be forced to undergo a character test and have the results shared within the relationship before a visa application can be made.
The government says the new changes will protect migrants from domestic and family violence.
Acting Immigration Minister Alan Tudge revealed further details of the changes, first announced in last week’s federal budget, on Wednesday morning, including that any adverse findings from the sponsor’s character check would be shared with their partner so they can “make an informed decision” about whether to proceed with an expensive visa application.
The results would include any information that suggests a potential threat of future violence, including past convictions and charges, Mr Tudge said.
Immigration officials, however, would still have discretion over whether a visa application can proceed.

Australia’s race discrimination commissioner has urged the federal government to consult with key community stakeholders on a new English language requirement for partner visas, warning it could serve to “segregate” migrant couples.
Race Discrimination Commissioner Chin Tan on Tuesday said the inclusion of the requirement in last week’s federal budget came as a surprise to those leaders in the multicultural sector.
The peak body for migration agents in Australia, the Migration Institute of Australia, has also told SBS News it received no prior warning.
Commissioner Tan said the requirement has led to “justifiable concern” among the community.
“I support a government position that promotes and encourages all migrants to Australia to acquire English,” he said.
“But where there is a policy that enforces and sanctions the rights of partners under the Partners Visa to remain in Australia based on their English proficiency, then that requirement may be unfair and may

Former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden depart after a pre-inauguration church service in Washington, D.C., January 18, 2009.
Devon Archer, a longtime business associate of Joe Biden’s son, was convicted in June, 2018 on charges related to his involvement in a scheme to defraud a Native American tribe.
The defendants, including Archer, are accused of pressuring the Wakpamni Lake Community Association, an affiliate of the Oglala Sioux Tribe to issue $60 million in economic-development bonds which the defendants then used for their own purposes, such as investing in their own businesses instead of investing it back into the tribe.
After his conviction, a federal judge in New York overturned Archer’s conviction later that year, saying the evidence was insufficient to
